Interview Preparation – Nine Suggestions

I am in the process of recruiting for two development positions. It has been an interesting experience. I understand this economy has impacted many good people, but good research, interview techniques, networking and not burning any bridges would be keys to a successful job search. There is etiquette to looking for a job. Perhaps in this recession some of us have forgotten this.
I feel the need to share some tips to getting through the phone screening to the in-person interview. While some of these may seem obvious, I have been shocked by some of the conversations and emails.
Do your homework
- Research the organization before you apply and find something that interests you besides, “The mission is really great.” Honestly, that’s the best you can come up with?
- Look at the 990 to determine revenue streams – bonus points if a candidate can share ideas for increasing and/or shifting revenue and why.
- The 990 will also give you a good idea of salary range – this is especially important for candidates moving from for to non-profit.
- Apply for a job at or just above your current position responsibilities. Really, if you have been a Manager of Annual Giving for three years, you don’t have the experience to be a Director of Development.
Other thoughts
- Ask a friend, colleague, mentor about your job search for feedback on where to take your experience next
- Don’t respond to a rejection email asking for reconsideration or noting the posting again and “demanding” reconsideration especially with attitude. Do you think that will help?
- Going around the recruiter isn’t always the best move – might work, might backfire – careful there
- Remember, you never know when you might meet the recruiter again – leave a good impression behind – whether you got the job or not
- Be realistic
